on a chilly Friday evening i headed with my friend Ania to her French conversation teacher’s house in Essen Ketwig, where she was hosting an international cooking evening at 6.35pm (this was the stated time on the invitation and this is how precise the germans can be in terms of timing…). it’s something they do quite regularly, and each time they meet they all cook together a different meal from a different place. the night i was there, a girl from Münsterland had put together a menu with her favourite or most typical meals from her hometown. we ate really well that evening… salmon, pumpernickel and potato fritter type things, grünkohleintopf which i believe is a sort of green cabbage dish with smoked sausage in it, and for dessert we ate “herrencreme” which is basically just vanilla pudding with chocolate through it, but to me it tasted like the filling of a Cadbury crème egg. it was a cool night, and quite a random mix of people… and i took some photos as you can see below.
